Uruapan

Destinations

The Uruapan region offers a diversity of culture and natural beauty. It is made up of hundreds of acres of forest that during the centuries have been home to some of the most ancient Michoacán towns.

This region is characterized by its fertile land allowing different fruits and unique flowers to grow, diverse architectural structures from the 16th century, and the Tingambato pre-Columbian archeological zone. The essence of Mexico can be enjoyed in the streets through its festivals, music, dances, cuisine and costumes.

The city of Uruapan was named the "Avocado Capital of the World" in 1858 and was then also called "Uruapan of Progress". Nevertheless, the most accurate title is "the true cradle of maque" because of their production of trays, cups, masks and other objects decorated with this technique that goes back to pre-Columbian times.

Pátzcuaro

Destinations

Pátzcuaro is the heart of the "lacustre" or lake zone. In 1540, Don Vasco de Quiroga transferred from Tzintzuntzan to Pátzcuaro the bishopric of Michoacán, making the city the capital of Michoacán.

Pátzcuaro is a true colonial jewel where baroque and neo-classical style religious monuments can be appreciated. Buildings of adobe and tile create a harmonious atmosphere with plazas and fountains. The people are always amiable and create an enchanting environment that invites you to return again and again.

The main attractions in Pátzcuaro are: the Our Lady of Health Basilica, the Museum of Industrial and Popular Art, the Compañía de Jesús Temple and College, House of Eleven Patios (old convent of the Dominican nuns), Plaza Vasco de Quiroga, the old San Agustín Convent, and the San Francisco Temple.
